Merriweather at 9.6pt with a 1.5 line height — a face designed for long-form screen reading, set the way long-form is set. Of everything here this is the pairing that treats the letter as something to be read rather than scanned, which suits writing, publishing, research and policy roles where the prose itself is part of the evidence.
What it is not good for
Merriweather is a wide face and this is the smallest body size here; the two decisions are pulling against each other, and it is the pairing most sensitive to going over the length band.

Worth being plain about, because a gallery of eight cards implies eight documents. It is one document in eight settings. A cover letter is four paragraphs of prose with no sections, no columns and no headings, so every template here prints the same words in the same order — and a test asserts exactly that, on every render.

I am writing about the Senior Backend Engineer opening on the payments platform at Northwind Trading. The
posting describes services that have to reconcile under partial failure, which is the problem I have spent the last
four years on.
At Acme I rebuilt the settlement pipeline. The hard part was not the throughput but the partial failures : a run
that died halfway used to need a manual reconciliation the next morning, so I moved the write path to an
idempotent ledger keyed on the upstream transaction id. Reconciliation went from 40 minutes to 3, and the
morning job stopped existing.
Migrating fourteen services onto a shared event bus taught me the failure mode your posting hints at —
consumers that are correct individually and wrong together. We ended up versioning the events rather than the
consumers, which is a decision I would want to talk through before repeating it.

Why there is no score on this page
Our resume template pages publish an eight-category score, because half of that rubric is measured against text extracted from our own PDF. No applicant tracking system parses a cover letter into fields, so the same number here would be invented. What we check instead is specific and checkable: whether the letter names the company and the role, whether it repeats your resume, whether it makes a claim your resume cannot support, and whether it closes on something a reader could not have predicted.
Do you need one at all?
Often not. Most applications do not read them, and a generic letter is worse than none — job-specific letters draw meaningfully more callbacks than generic ones, and the difference is not the typeface. It is worth writing one when the posting asks for it, when a named person will read it, when the fit is not obvious from your resume, or on a senior role where the reader is assessing judgement.
