Are Canva resumes ATS-friendly?

The good news is that you do not have to take anyone’s word for it, including ours. There is a thirty-second test at the bottom of this page that answers it for your specific file.

Canva sorts by how it looks, because Canva is a design tool

This is not a criticism, it is the product working as intended. On canva.com/resumes/templates on 17 August 2026 there were 20,117 resume templates, and the filters offered for narrowing them down were Professional, Modern, Simple, Infographic, Minimalist, Corporate, Creative, Photo, Colorful and Acting.

Every one of those is a description of appearance. None of them is about whether the text comes back out of the file. Of the fifty templates on the first page, exactly one had “ATS” in its name — and that name was written by the person who made the template, the same way the one beside it is called “White & Peach Modern Professional”. It is a title, not a certification.

So “is a Canva resume ATS-friendly” has no single answer, in the same way “is a Word document ATS-friendly” has no single answer. Twenty thousand templates is twenty thousand different layouts.

What actually goes wrong, and why it is invisible

The thing that makes this hard is that every failure below looks perfect on screen. That is not a coincidence — it is the definition of the problem. A parser does not see the page. It reads the text stream inside the file, and the order of that stream is not always the order you see.

We know this precisely because it happened to us. In our own templates, a bullet marker built from a positioned decoration rather than a real list marker moved every bullet into a different paint layer, and Chromium writes PDF text in paint order — so every bullet extracted after every employer name. The rendered page was flawless. The controlled experiment is where we changed one declaration at a time and extracted the text back out of every render.

A canvas-based editor is structurally more exposed to that class of problem than a document editor, because everything on the page is a positioned element by design. That is a statement about the mechanism, not a test result: we have not run Canva’s exports through our pipeline and this page will not pretend otherwise.

The specific things worth checking on a Canva design:

• Icons standing in for labels. A little envelope glyph beside your email is a graphic, and a graphic extracts as nothing. The address survives; the fact that it is an email address does not. Same for the phone, the location pin and the LinkedIn bird.
• Skill rating bars, dials and star ratings. These extract as nothing at all, so a beautifully presented skills section can arrive as a list of words with no levels — or, if the words are inside the graphic, as an empty section.
• A photo or coloured band across the header. Whatever sits on top of it is still text, but the header is the region where layout containers cluster, and it is also where your name and phone number live. This is the block worth checking first.
• A sidebar. Not fatal on its own — a side column does not lose text. What it costs is order across a page boundary, and the detail is in are two-column resumes ATS-safe.
• An unusual typeface. Canva’s font library is enormous and a font can embed correctly, print perfectly and still lose characters when the text is pulled back out. We shipped one that silently deleted six digits and two letters from a preview, which is how fonts that break resume parsing got written.
• Downloading as PNG or JPG. This is the one total failure, and it is a menu choice rather than a design flaw. An image contains no text whatsoever. Choose a PDF option.

The thirty-second test

This settles it for your file and costs nothing, and it works for any tool, not just Canva.

   Download as PDF and open it

   Canva's “PDF Standard” or “PDF Print” — never PNG or JPG.

   Select all, copy, paste into a plain text editor

   Notepad, TextEdit in plain text mode, or any code editor.

   Read what pasted, top to bottom

   Name first? Jobs in order with their bullets under them? Dates present? Then the design is fine.

If nothing pastes, your resume is an image and no applicant tracking system can read a word of it. If your name is not first, if a skills list has landed in the middle of your job history, or if dates have gone missing, that is what gets filed against the application. If it reads top to bottom the way the page does, the design is fine and you should stop worrying about it.

When Canva is the right answer anyway

Plenty of the advice on this query is really an advert with a warning attached, so it is worth being straight about this.

• You are applying to a design or creative role. A portfolio-grade document is doing a job that a plain one cannot, and the reviewer is a human looking at your taste.
• You are handing it to a person. A referral, a careers fair, an email to a hiring manager, a printed copy. No parser is involved and the constraints on this page do not apply.
• It is free and you are already in it. A finished resume in a tool you know beats a better one you never finish. That is especially true if this is your first — see your first resume with no work experience.
• You picked a plain template and it passed the test above. Then it is ATS-friendly. There is nothing else to buy.
