Filling it in, line by line
- The contact line. City and state, not a full postal address. One phone number. An email address that is your name. Drop the GitHub link if it is empty — an empty profile is worse than no link.
- Marks. Always with the scale:
8.4/10 CGPA, never a bare8.4. Give the percentage too if your college reports both, because many portals ask for one specifically. Class X only if you have the room. The India page has the detail. - Projects, and this is the section that decides the document. Two or three. Lead each bullet with what changed, not with the stack. “Built a web app using React, Node and MongoDB” is the weak version of every project bullet ever written; the hub shows the strong version of the same sentence.
- Internships. Same shape as a job. If you have none, delete the heading — an empty section reads as a gap, and projects are doing this work anyway.
- Skills. Grouped, plain, comma-separated. Only things you would be willing to be asked about in the interview.
- Positions of responsibility. Genuinely useful in Indian campus hiring and usually undersold. Give it scale: how many people, how much money, how many events.
Notice what is not in the skeleton: no objective, no declaration, no date of birth, no father’s name, no hobbies, no “references available on request”. Those are missing on purpose and the hub explains each one.
If you paste this into Word
Three things, and then you are done.
- Use real bullet lists for the
·lines rather than typing a symbol and a space. It makes no visible difference and it is the difference between a marker and a character in your sentence. - Keep it in one column. Do not move the skills block into a sidebar, which in Word means an invisible table, and an extracted table interleaves cell by cell.
- Put nothing in the header or footer. Many parsers skip those regions, so a phone number there can simply not exist.
Then export to PDF, open it, select all, copy, and paste into a plain text editor. What pastes is roughly what an applicant tracking system receives. Our free checker does the same extraction and scores eight categories, with no account.
Why this is text and not a .docx
Because a .docx would be worse for you, not because we are holding one back. A downloaded template arrives with the formatting already decided — usually a two-column table, icons and a rating bar, because that is what looks good in a template gallery thumbnail — and the first job with any of them is deleting that. Text has none of it. You get the structure and your own document.
