The best free resume builder, and what “free” means at each one

Three builders and ours, free tiers checked on the same day. Which ones give you a PDF without paying, which hand you a TXT file, and what the paid step costs when you hit it.

Last reviewed

Almost every builder that calls itself free is free up to the download. You build the resume, it looks finished, and the export button asks for a card — or hands you a plain-text file that looks nothing like what was on screen. That is not a trick anyone is hiding; it is the category’s standard shape, and knowing it in advance is most of what this comparison is for.

Every free-tier detail below was read off the vendor’s own plan page on 11 August 2026. Check them before you commit an afternoon to any of these, including ours.

What each free tier actually gives you

BuilderFree tier (11 Aug 2026)Free PDF?
resume.ioOne resume and one cover letter. No — free downloads are TXT only.
ZetyFull builder and templates. No — free downloads are TXT only.
NovoresumeOne resume version, capped at 1 page, no cover letter, 3 fonts, 30 colour themes.Yes, within those caps.
GetFinalCVA full ATS check on a resume you already have, with no account and no card.No. One payment per finished resume.

Read this before you pick on the word “free”

A TXT export is not a resume. It is the text with every line break, heading and margin removed, and sending it to an employer is worse than sending the Word file you started with. When a plan page says “download for free” and the format is TXT, the free tier is a preview of the builder, not a way to get a document out of it.

The second thing to check is what the paid tier does when you stop paying. On 11 August 2026 Zety listed $1.95 for a 14-day trial that then becomes $25.95 every four weeks, or $71.40 up front for a year — both auto-renewing until cancelled. resume.io’s plan card said “One-time payment, no need to cancel” while the FAQ on the same page described a 7-day trial that auto-subscribes to the monthly plan. Read the FAQ, not the card.

So which free builder is best?

It depends on what you actually need out of the next hour.

  • If you need a PDF today and cannot pay: Novoresume. It is the only one here with a genuinely free PDF, and the one-page cap is not a real constraint for most people — one page is usually the right answer anyway. We are not the recommendation in this case and there is no version of this page where we are.
  • If you already have a resume and want to know why it is not getting replies: the builder is the wrong tool entirely. Run the file through a parser first — our ATS checker needs no account and shows you the text a parser gets back. Most of the time the fix is wording and structure and you do not need to buy anything.
  • If you want to try a builder before deciding: Zety and resume.io both let you build the whole document free. Just do it knowing the PDF is the paid step, so you are evaluating the editor, not getting a resume.
  • If you want to pay once and never think about it again: that is the trade we sell, and the one-time-versus-subscription comparison is where it is argued properly. Our amount is set per country, so pricing is the only honest place to read it.

The question underneath “which one is free”

No builder can promise you a shortlist, and the templates are close enough to identical across all four that the choice barely moves the outcome. What moves it is whether the file parses and whether the bullets read as evidence. Both are checkable, neither costs anything to check, and neither depends on which builder you picked:

  1. What an ATS actually reads from your PDF — a screenshot beside the extracted text, for our own templates.
  2. Whether a two-column layout costs you anything — the honest answer, including where it does.
  3. Which keywords are worth adding and which are padding a human will notice.
